Hero · Split word

Intro (H1, lead, button) beside a full-height photo that runs to the screen edge, with a rounded bottom corner; one huge word crosses both halves at the bottom, dark on the page and in negative over the photo. Photo and word come in when the hero is seen.

In the builder

Preview on the front end. Scripts don't run inside the builder, so here you only see the layout: the entrance only runs on the front end (it waits for the hero to be seen); here everything is in place. Save and open the page to see the full result.

Structure

This is what the Bricks Structure panel shows after you paste the template. Component instances say which component they are.

The template also pastes a dashed note above the section, with the short version of this page. It only shows inside the builder, never on the published page — see Builder notes.

How to adjust

Every step is the same move: pick the element in the Structure panel, change its Properties.

Where are those panels?

How to adjust a template shows every one of them in a screenshot of the real builder: the Structure and Properties panels, the classes on an element, a component's style families and the field where a CSS variable goes.

  1. Paste the template in Bricks first — see Copy and paste.
  2. Select Intro (FBK Intro) › Properties: Eyebrow, Hide eyebrow, Title, Title level, Lead, Hide lead · Style group: Eyebrow style, Highlight, Title size, Accent line · Layout group: Alignment, Layout, Background, Spacing · Motion group: Reveal in slider.
  3. Select Button (FBK Button) › Properties: Text, Link, Tone, Shadow on hover · Icon group: Icon, Icon position · Style group: Style, Size, Width, Hover effect.
  4. Spacing, sizes, color and timing with no property of their own: the CSS variables below.

CSS variables

These are the only values in the template meant to be changed by hand. Copy the block, paste it, edit the numbers.

/* «Hero» · class .fbk-splitword */
.fbk-splitword {
/* Minimum height of the hero, size of the big word, opacity of the diagonal
panel, rounded corner of the photo */
--fbk-t-height: max(40em, 90svh);
--fbk-t-word-size: clamp(5em, 17vw, 17em);
--fbk-t-panel: 35%;
--fbk-t-corner: 4em;
/* How long the photo takes to open when the page loads (the panel and the
word follow it) */
--fbk-t-enter: 1.2s;
}

Paste the block in the element's Style → CSS field (the selector is already in it), or set the same variables on the class itself to change every copy at once. The values are your framework's variables, so they follow your site: Choosing a framework.

Requirements

  • Code execution. Needs "Execute code" enabled for the role in Bricks → Settings → Custom code, or the JS block shows as plain text instead of running.

What each requirement is, and how to set it up once for the whole site: Requirements.

Finish by hand

  • Replace the photo (decorative: the alt stays empty) and the big word (Big word; hidden from screen readers, so keep it short). It changes color with what is behind it (mix-blend-mode: difference in .fbk-splitword__word): white over a light page reads dark.
  • Size of the word and the photo's rounded corner: --fbk-t-word-size and --fbk-t-corner on .fbk-splitword.
  • A light diagonal panel over the photo is available but off by default (it cut across the big word): add fbk-splitword__media--slant to the Media block to bring it back, and fbk-splitword__media--peek on top of that if you also want it to retreat into its corner on hover. --fbk-t-panel on .fbk-splitword sets its opacity.
  • The entrance waits until a third of the hero is on screen (code element Entrance when visible, needs "Execute code"; without it everything is simply in place). Its rules are the [data-fbk-armed] ones in .fbk-splitword__media, __media--slant and __word.
  • The button's hover is the FBK Button effect Sweep.
  • A second, white copy of the big word ("Big word · white over photo") sits on top, masked to only the part that falls over the photo: without it, that part showed the mix-blend-mode pattern inverted against the photo's own colors, which read as noisy. Edit both copies together if you change the word.

On phones

The template is designed desktop first, the Bricks default, and only changes at the two widths the library uses:

  • 991px and below — .fbk-splitword, .fbk-splitword__media, .fbk-splitword__word (+2 more), .fbk-intro.
  • 767px and below — .fbk-section.

Those changes live in Bricks' own breakpoint fields, so you edit them where you always do: pick the breakpoint in the toolbar and the same fields follow.

Careful with the classes shared by the whole library (fbk-section, fbk-intro, the component classes): a change there shows up in every template that uses them.

If your site's breakpoints are set up mobile first, copy the mobile-first variant of the template instead — see Copy and paste.

Accessibility

In this template, keyboard focus is visible on every interactive piece; movement is cut back when the visitor's system asks for less motion; the state screen readers need is already set (aria-hidden).

What is checked on every template, and what depends on your own palette: Accessibility.

Dark mode

With your site in dark mode this section turns dark too — the class fbk-section--auto-dark on the section does it. Remove the class to keep it light.

Its background is a modifier on the section, so you can swap it for any of the ones the template is checked with: fbk-section--light, fbk-section--soft, fbk-section--dark.
