Cards · Expand

A row of tall photo cards: the one under the mouse widens and shows its text and button, the others make room and keep only their title. A column with everything visible on tablets and phones.

This is what the Bricks Structure panel shows after you paste the template. Component instances say which component they are.

The template also pastes a dashed note above the section, with the short version of this page. It only shows inside the builder, never on the published page — see Builder notes.

How to adjust

Every step is the same move: pick the element in the Structure panel, change its Properties.

Where are those panels?

How to adjust a template shows every one of them in a screenshot of the real builder: the Structure and Properties panels, the classes on an element, a component's style families and the field where a CSS variable goes.

  1. Paste the template in Bricks first — see Copy and paste.
  2. Select Intro (FBK Intro) › Properties: Eyebrow, Hide eyebrow, Title, Title level, Lead, Hide lead · Style group: Eyebrow style, Highlight, Title size, Accent line · Layout group: Alignment, Layout, Background, Spacing · Motion group: Reveal in slider.
  3. Select Card · Discover, Card · Design, Card · Build (+1 more) (FBK Card) › Properties: Title, Title level, Text, Hide text · Style group: Highlight, Title size, Look, Tone, Shape, Photo overlay, Padding, Photo hover, Background · Layout group: HTML tag, Layout.
  4. Select Card · Button ×4 (FBK Button) › Properties: Text, Link, Tone, Shadow on hover · Icon group: Icon, Icon position · Style group: Style, Size, Width, Hover effect.
  5. Spacing, sizes, color and timing with no property of their own: the CSS variables below.

CSS variables

These are the only values in the template meant to be changed by hand. Copy the block, paste it, edit the numbers.

/* «Expanding cards» · class .fbk-cardsexpand */
.fbk-cardsexpand {
/* Card height, extra width (and text width) of the open card */
--fbk-t-height: 30em;
--fbk-t-open: 20em;
--fbk-t-speed: 0.7s;
--fbk-t-text-delay: 0.25s;
--fbk-t-text-in: 0.6s;
--fbk-t-text-out: 0.15s;
--fbk-t-text-rise: 1.5em;
/* How long the row waits, once the mouse has left it, before the first card
opens again (row script) */
--fbk-row-wait: 0.2s;
/* one hover duration for the whole library (--fbk-hover) */
--fbk-t-time: var(--fbk-hover);
}

Paste the block in the element's Style → CSS field (the selector is already in it), or set the same variables on the class itself to change every copy at once. The values are your framework's variables, so they follow your site: Choosing a framework.

Finish by hand

  • To add a card, duplicate one inside Expanding cards (or put a query loop there, a card with HTML tag li): any number works. Short titles (one or two words) read best on the narrow closed cards.
  • Card height and extra width of the open card: --fbk-t-height and --fbk-t-open on .fbk-cardsexpand (the open width also sets the width of the text, so it never re-wraps); speed: --fbk-t-speed on .fbk-cardsexpand--open.
  • The widening is the class .fbk-cardsexpand--open (Style > CSS: one column rule per card for 2 to 8 cards; the first card is open while the mouse is away). Remove it for equal cards with all the text visible.
  • Hover intent: the code element Expanding cards · Hover intent (JS) (needs Execute code) opens the card where the mouse slows down, as FBK Panel accordion: a fast sweep does not open every card on its way. It marks the open card with data-fbk-on (Expanding cards carries data-fbk-row); --fbk-row-wait is how long the row waits before the first card opens again. Without it the card under the mouse opens.

On phones

The template is designed desktop first, the Bricks default, and only changes at the two widths the library uses:

  • 991px and below — .fbk-cardsexpand, .fbk-cardsexpand--open, .fbk-intro.
  • 767px and below — .fbk-section.

Those changes live in Bricks' own breakpoint fields, so you edit them where you always do: pick the breakpoint in the toolbar and the same fields follow.

Careful with the classes shared by the whole library (fbk-section, fbk-intro, the component classes): a change there shows up in every template that uses them.

If your site's breakpoints are set up mobile first, copy the mobile-first variant of the template instead — see Copy and paste.

Accessibility

In this template, keyboard focus is visible on every interactive piece; movement is cut back when the visitor's system asks for less motion.

What is checked on every template, and what depends on your own palette: Accessibility.

Dark mode

With your site in dark mode this section turns dark too — the class fbk-section--auto-dark on the section does it. Remove the class to keep it light.

Its background is a modifier on the section, so you can swap it for any of the ones the template is checked with: fbk-section--light, fbk-section--dark, fbk-section--soft.
